St. Peter's Centre - the latest news
For some 25 years there has been a dream - of a centre that will utilise the prime location and community facilities of St. Peter's Church to serve the people of Derby. Recently, a number of us got together to prayerfully work out more precisely what this dream was all about, and this is what we came up with.
St. Peter's Centre would be a place:
* providing a hub for proactive communication and support for residents, employers, employees and visitors in the city centre.
* being a community facility for leisure, training and improved health and well being.
offering welcome, support and resources to all sectors within the city - civic, business, commerce, retail, entertainment - and to all sections of the community - families, children, elderly, students and the unemployed and disadvantaged.
* working in partnership with other providers - public, private and voluntary - to develop further a sense of community within the city centre.
* making available an important heritage site for arts, education, culture, leisure and tourism.
The good news is that the waiting is over! Following some wonderful help we received from ProHelp Business in the Community, who enabled us to receive free professional advice to the value of £4000 from an architect, quantity surveyor, structural engineer and VAT expert, we have redesigned our plans so that not only are they now affordable but they provide all that we need once the building is completed.
Over the last couple of years we have launched some new projects, including the ecumenical Derby City Centre Chaplaincy and Serve The City, as well as St. Peter's Christians Against Poverty debt centre. This means that St. Peter's Centre, providing additional office space, refurbished toilets, a disabled toilet and a larger lobby, improved access to our hall by the provision of a lift is more than just something we want, it is something we need!
Following Gift Days in 2009 and 2011, about £40,000 was raised from our very generous congregation. In addition, funds from the sale of a mission hall and a number of grants has meant that the majority of our finances have been raised. We are delighted to have received a new grant of £10,000 in February 2012 from the Garfield Weston Foundation towards the cost of the project.
The needs around St. Peter's are great, and we cannot help everyone, but we are inspired by Jesus, who was filled with compassion when he saw the poverty, the hunger and the sickness so prevalent in his society - and it is the same today. Therefore, we believe that St. Peter's Centre will complement and extend the Christian life and witness of St. Peter's Church by being a place where people of all ages and walks of life who live, work or visit in the city centre can find practical, emotional and spiritual support.
St. Peter's Centre will be officially opened by the
Bishop of Derby, Rt. Rev. Dr. Alastair Redfern on June 9th.
